Oceanic Whitetip Shark 

Building an Oceanic whitetip database in the maldives

Every oceanic whitetip shark has a unique combination of fin markings, pigmentation patterns, and other natural features that allow researchers to identify individuals without invasive tagging. By photographing sharks over time, we are building a long-term catalogue of known individuals and answer important ecological questions.

SIZE MEASUREMENTS

Estimating the size of free-swimming sharks underwater is challenging. To overcome this, we use laser photogrammetry—a non-invasive method that projects two parallel laser points a known distance apart onto the shark's body.

Using calibrated photographs, we can accurately estimate body length without disturbing the animal.

Movement

Satellite tagging using PSAT tags provides valuable insights into the large-scale movements, habitat use, and diving behaviour of oceanic whitetip sharks. The tags record depth, temperature, and light levels before detaching after a programmed period and transmitting the data via satellite, helping us better understand migration patterns and critical habitats essential for conservation.
