Team
Dedication. Expertise. Passion.
Our team at Nature Friends of Maldives consists of marine scientists, local conservationists, and experienced divers at Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah who support our research as associates. We thrive in a highly collaborative environment, working closely with partners to advance conservation and scientific understanding.

I was born and raised in Fuvahmulah, and sharks, especially our famous tiger sharks, have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up in the water shaped who I am today and inspired me to become a shark diver, dedicated to creating safe and respectful interactions between people and these incredible animals.
As the owner of Pelagic Divers and the founder of Nature Friends of Maldives, i wanted to build a platform that brings conservation, science, and community together. Fuvahmulah deserves strong protection, and establishing this NGO was my way of helping our island lead the way in shark conservation and research.
Over the years, I’ve worked with different NGOs, including One Ocean Diving, on projects to reduce single-use plastics and promote ocean awareness. Whether it’s supporting scientists, guiding visitors, or empowering local youth, I’m driven by the goal of keeping our sharks and our ocean healthy for the next generation.
And when I’m not diving, you’ll probably find me skydiving, another passion that reminds me how small we are and how important it is to protect the world we have.
Luca Aßhauer
science coordinator & Lead Researcher
I'm a marine biologist mostly focusing on shark ecology. My journey into shark science began in 2018, when I first started diving with bull sharks in Fiji. That experience sparked my passion for elasmobranchs and set me on a path that has guided my career ever since. Over the years, I have worked with several NGOs dedicated to shark conservation, contributing to research, community outreach, and political advocacy, including engagements with EU representatives to support stronger protections against shark finning.
Education and communication have always been central to my work. I have visited numerous schools, led public science presentations, and helped make marine research accessible to local communities.
Alongside my research, I have gained extensive field experience in data collection, behavioural observation, photo-ID, laser photogrammetry, and supervising interns in both practical and analytical work. I also contributed to deep-sea research on hydrothermal vents, though sharks have always remained my first passion.

science coordinator
I’m a marine scientist working with sharks and other large marine animals. My work blends field research, animal behavior, and conservation across multiple ocean regions.I’ve led and supported research projects in the Indian Ocean and beyond, from data collection to analysis and publication. I’ve contributed to peer-reviewed science, conservation reports, and real-world wildlife interaction guidelines.
Much of my experience comes from long days underwater, on boats, and in remote field sites. The rest comes from long evenings turning messy data into something that actually makes sense. I regularly coordinate teams, mentor interns, and manage research operations in challenging environments.I also enjoy translating science for the public through talks, outreach, and social media.
I focus on evidence, context, and curiosity—rather than fear and headlines. Basically, I take marine science seriously so others can enjoy the ocean a little more calmly.
